Conference

On Saturday, September 29th and Sunday, September 30th 2018 another Economics of Happiness conference was held in the city of Prato near Florence, Italy.

A number of stimulating workshops took place on September 29th in the beautiful Villa San Leonardo al Palco on such topics as rethinking progress, decolonizing our imaginations, local food and farming, media and the fabrication of thought, happiness and place, culture and education, happiness and health. The conference took place in Teatro Politeama in the centre of Prato.

Speakers

George Ferguson

has an international profile as an advocate for liveable cities and the global environment. He was President of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) from 2003 to 2005 and the first elected Mayor of Bristol, UK (2012-16). In the 90’s he developed the ‘Tobacco Factory’ in South Bristol, a model for culture-led city regeneration. He was awarded a CBE by the Queen for services to architecture and the community in 2010 and has honorary degrees from the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England.

Helena Norberg-Hodge

Helena Norberg-Hodge

A pioneer of the new economy movement, Helena Norberg-Hodge is the recipient of both the Right Livelihood Award and the Goi Peace Prize. She is the founder and director of Local Futures (formerly ISEC) and the International Alliance for Localization. She produced and co-directed the award-winning film The Economics of Happiness, and is the author of the inspirational classic Ancient Futures. Helena is also a founding member of the International Forum on Globalization, the International Commission on the Future of Food and Agriculture, and the Global Ecovillage Network.

Keibo Oiwa – Japan

is a cultural anthropologist and leading environmental activist in Japan. He is also a filmmaker, public speaker and author/co-author of over 50 books. He teaches at Meiji Gakuin University and is the founder of The Sloth Club – an NGO that promotes slow and sustainable living. The Sloth Club, coupled with Keibo’s book Slow is Beautiful: Culture as Slowness, have encouraged a new appreciation of rural life and a simpler way of living, with community and nature the focus. Keibo has organised several successful Economics of Happiness conferences in Japan in collaboration with Local Futures. Read more about Keibo here.

Manish Jain – India

is a leading voice for the regeneration of diverse local knowledge systems, cultural imaginations, and the deschooling of our lives. He is the Co-Founder and coordinator of the Udaipur-based Shikshantar: The Peoples’ Institute for Rethinking Education and Development, and the co-founder of some of the most innovative educational experiments in the world: Swaraj University, the Jail University, the Creativity Adda, the Learning Societies Unconference, the Walkouts-Walkonnetwork, Udaipur as a Learning City, and the Families Learning Together network. He recently helped to launch the global Ecoversities Network. Manish is the editor of several books on learning societies, unlearning, gift culture, community media, and tools for deep dialogue.

Serge Latouche

was born in Vannes on January 12th, 1940. He is emeritus professor of economics at the University of Paris-Sud and one of the leading theorists of the emerging degrowth movement that has its main roots among French and Italian thinkers (decroissance, decrescita).
