Jeonju, South Korea 2017

Conference


In collaboration with the Jeonju city government we have hosted our 10th Economics of Happiness Conference in that city on September 20th – 22nd, 2017 – our third in what has become an annual event. The conference, which as held in the Korean Traditional Culture Centre and signals the Jeonju government’s ongoing commitment to the global-to-local shift, also involved the participation of an association of 37 Korean mayors. In addition to voices from South Korea, the conference included several international speakers.

Speakers

Anja Lyngbaek – Denmark/ Mexico

is an Associate Programs Director with Local Futures, and coordinator of the International Alliance for Localization. She currently lives in Mexico on a small-holding with her family. She co-founded Microcuenca del Rio Citlalapa – a local NGO in Veracruz, focused on sustainable community development, and a rural primary school with similar goals. Anja gives talks, holds workshops and teaches on a variety of subject related to food and farming, localization and eco-technologies.

Gwendolyn Hallsmith

Gwendolyn Hallsmith is the founder and director of Global Community Initiatives, and an advisor to the Public Banking Institute. With Michael Shuman, she is the author of Vermont Dollars, Vermont Sense, which profiles 28 local investment tools for grassroots investors, businesses, finance professionals, and others – with examples of how these ideas are being realized today in Vermont, the state with the strongest local economy movement in the United States.

Simon Richardson

Simon Richardson has previously been a publisher, and educator, and an activist. Today, he is the twice-elected mayor of Byron Shire, Australia, widely regarded as one of the country’s most progressive, “greenest” local authorities. Under Simon’s leadership, Byron council is actively promoting decentralised renewable energy, local food initiatives and affordable green housing. Byron Bay was the site of an Economics of Happiness conference in 2013.
