Jeonju, South Korea 2015

Conference

Local Futures’ 6th international Economics of Happiness Conference took place in Jeonju, South Korea from September 3rd – 5th, 2015.  As an initiative of the Mayor of Jeonju himself, the event was organized in collaboration with the Jeonju city government.

This gathering provided an exciting opportunity to contribute to positive policy change and resulted in the Jeonju Declaration on the Economics of Happiness. For the full text see here:

The Jeonju Economics of Happiness Conference was followed by a meeting of local government representatives on September 7th, entitled “Economics of Happiness: Localization and the Future of Society”. Download the program here

Helena Norberg-Hodge – Byron Bay, Australia

A pioneer of the new economy movement, Helena Norberg-Hodge is the recipient of both the Right Livelihood Award and the Goi Peace Prize. She is the founder and director of Local Futures (formerly ISEC) and the International Alliance for Localization. She produced and co-directed the award-winning film The Economics of Happiness, and is the author of the inspirational classic Ancient Futures. Helena is also a founding member of the International Forum on Globalization, the International Commission on the Future of Food and Agriculture, and the Global Ecovillage Network.

Janelle Orsi

Janelle Orsi is a lawyer, advocate, writer, and cartoonist focused on cooperatives, the sharing economy, urban agriculture, shared housing, local currencies, and community-supported enterprise. She is Co-Founder and Executive Director of the Sustainable Economies Law Center and author of Practicing Law in the Sharing Economy (ABA Books 2012).

Judy Wicks – Philadelphia, PA

Author, activist, entrepreneur, and a pioneer in the local food movement, Judy Wicks founded Philadelphia’s iconic White Dog Cafe in 1983. She is the founder of Fair Food Philly and the Sustainable Business Network of Greater Philadelphia, and co-founder of the nationwide Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (BALLE). Good Morning, Beautiful Business, Judy’s acclaimed memoir, won a national gold medal for business leadership.

Keibo Oiwa – Japan

is a cultural anthropologist and leading environmental activist in Japan. He is also a filmmaker, public speaker and author/co-author of over 50 books. He teaches at Meiji Gakuin University and is the founder of The Sloth Club – an NGO that promotes slow and sustainable living. The Sloth Club, coupled with Keibo’s book Slow is Beautiful: Culture as Slowness, have encouraged a new appreciation of rural life and a simpler way of living, with community and nature the focus. Keibo has organised several successful Economics of Happiness conferences in Japan in collaboration with Local Futures. Read more about Keibo here.

Neil McInroy

Chief Executive of the Centre for Local Economic Strategies (UK), Neil has been involved in public sector policy and delivery for over 20 years. Whilst having experience in developing partnerships and innovative policy responses to global, regional and local economic, social and environmental challenges, his particular skills are in local economic and social research, analysis and development; policy practice, research methodologies; facilitation and strategy building. He regularly conducts work across UK and in locations around the world. A leading commentator on economic development and public policy, Neil has featured in Local Government Chronicle’s annual top 50 most influential people in local government. He is chair of the Greater Manchester Poverty Action Group. He is also an Honorary Fellow at the University Of Manchester. Neil became chief executive of CLES in 2003.
