During this event attendees explored an economics of personal, social and ecological well-being, and digged deeply into the growing worldwide movement for degrowth and economic localisation with Jason Hickel and Helena Norberg-Hodge. Through this conversation, participants developed an understanding of the situation our economic system has put us in, and how to mobilize yourself to take a stand against current economic thinking.
The event consisted of a 30-minute keynote talk by Helena, a 20-minute talk by Jason, discussion between the two, and a Q&A and discussion with the audience.
Co-organized by Local Futures and the Advaya Initiative, a non-profit, grassroots ecological organisation aiming to inspire activism and healing in our relationships with ourselves and the natural world.

Speakers
Jason Hickel is an anthropologist, author, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. He has taught at the London School of Economics, the University of Virginia, and Goldsmiths, University of London, where he convenes the MA in Anthropology and Cultural Politics. He serves on the Labour Party task force on international development, works as Policy Director for /The Rules collective, sits on the Executive Board of Academics Stand Against Poverty (ASAP) and recently joined the International Editorial Advisory Board of Third World Quarterly. Jason’s research focuses on global inequality, political economy, post-development, and ecological economics. His most recent book, The Divide: A Brief Guide to Global Inequality and its Solutions, was published in 2017. Jason writes a column for The Guardian and contributes to a number of other outlets including Foreign Policy, Fast Company, Jacobin, Le Monde Diplomatique, Truthout, and Monthly Review. | ||

Helena Norberg-Hodge is a pioneer of the new economy movement and recipient of the Right Livelihood Award and the Goi Peace Prize. Her inspirational book Ancient Futures has been translated into more than 35 languages. She is co-author of Bringing the Food Economy Home and From the Ground Up: Rethinking Industrial Agriculture and the producer of the award-winning documentary The Economics of Happiness. She also is the director of Local Futures and the International Alliance for Localization (IAL), and a founding member of the International Forum on Globalization (IFG) and Global Ecovillage Network. |
