The IAL builds on the social networks Local Futures has developed over more than three decades of global-to-local work across the globe.
After the release of Helena Norberg-Hodge´s book, Ancient Futures/Learning from Ladakh and a film by the same title, we were contacted by individuals and groups from every continent, who told us “The story of Ladakh is our story too”. This led to a broad informal ‘Ancient Futures’ network which forms the background to the IAL.
We began laying the groundwork for a localization platform in 2006 at our conference in Ladakh, India called “Beyond the Monoculture: Strengthening Local Culture, Economy, and Knowledge.”
Further steps were taken at our international Economics of Happiness conferences in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016, where the need for and shape of an international network for localization was discussed widely, with key thinkers, activist and NGOs from the global South and North.
