Many indigenous societies have demonstrated key elements of sustainability, such as long term conservation of biodiversity and intergenerational environmenta equity. Dr. Debal Deb (see event listing for November 30 for brief profile) will discuss the features of these societies that have led to positive ecological outcomes. He will focus on how the communitarian ethos of many indigenous societies nullifies the inherently unsustainable profit motive of capitalism by obviating the commodification of nature, luxury consumption and the alienation of producers from production.
