Dr. Debal Deb is a community and agroecologist, ecological economist and founder-chair of the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies in West Bengal, India. His work has led to the conservation and regeneration of over 600 varieties of traditional rice to date - the largest non-governmental rice seed repository in eastern India. These ancient farmer-selected varieties have already proven invaluable for food security in hurricane affected areas of Bengal where modern hybrid cultivars have failed. Deb will discuss the crucial importance of this agricultural heritage to food security and resilience in the face of climate change, and critically challenge the call for a 'second green revolution' to address the food crisis.

Location: Thimann Lecture Hall 1, University of Santa Cruz campus, Santa Cruz, California.

This talk is co-sponsored by ISEC.
